Between nightmares and witnesses, this film explores memory and collective responsibility. "The idea of the film had gnawed at me for several years, but the filming real-life images wasn't right" (Ari Folman). Folman uses an animated documentary for his search for memories. "This form gave me a great deal of freedom to evoke reality and also to explore the subconscious; a waking dream, fear and even war, the most unreal thing the brain can imagine" (Ari Folman). Although certain key elements in Folman's life have been completely erased, the aim of the exercise is to search for them 20 years on. "The search for traumatic memories buried deep in memories is a form of therapy" (Ari Folman).
