A masterpiece of neo-realistic inspiration, this film greatly influenced the new generation of Turkish filmmakers and gave Yılmaz Güney visibility outside his country. "The first half of Hope brings to mind Le voleur de bicyclette and the second half The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. But in the end, it's an original Turkish film that has points in common with films from Egypt and other Arab countries. It has become a contemporary film, a classic, directed and performed with strength of character." (Variety, 1978) "Hope initiated a new way of filming. For the first time, we see rural characters and realities that aren't clichéd, opening the door to a cinema receptive to social problems, although there is the risk of getting stuck somewhere between naturalism and realism." (Onat Kutlar, co-founder of the Istanbul Cinématheque)
