"At a time when the conflict in Vietnam was still an open wound in the US, Cimino gives us a bloody opera mingling lyricism with cynicism, where friendship, solidarity and heroism are simple values which drive the main characters" (Gérard Camy). The film focuses on the physical and moral trauma that the war caused and the bad conscience of the soldiers. "A detailed and patient study, the first part is a sort of suspension given to the characters by the director before they are launched into war. The second part, the only part to take place in Vietnam, is quick and violent, like a sudden awareness. Finally, in the last part, Cimino shows the scars of a nation and their external ugliness, that time believes it can erase" (Marine Landrot).
