From 1980 to 1986, Barbet Schroeder was desperately looking to finance Barfly, a film which was to be written by Bukowski. Over a period of two years he recorded the evenings he spent with Bukowski. "I asked as few questions as possible, always leaving the flood of words to come to a natural conclusion. It was also very important for him to keep alive the idea that creation could not, and should not, be too serious, a natural wisdom I liked a lot. I soon realised that the film worked as a succession of monologues. It was an unforgettable moment of solitary exaltation. I enjoyed the idea of having discovered a new form: the film equivalent of a collection of aphorisms" (Barbet Schroeder).
