Inspired by a true story of 1979, the film concentrates on Claus von Bulow's defence and on the way the accused and his lawyer try to overturn the ruling. "I was firstly interested in the opposition between the lawyer, who made a religion of justice and human rights, and this cynical, yet self-deprecating, European aristocrat" (Barbet Schroeder). The mystery surrounding the murder remains. "Whereas the slightest real-life story reconstituted on television is generally based on a minimum of belief in the truth, Barbet Schroeder's film, however, plunges us delightfully into spirals of falsehood and doubt. In Reversal of Fortune, it is the documentary which enables the fiction to take over and not the reverse" (Thierry Jousse).
