Whilst Ready Player One is an important film in the context of Steven Spielberg’s career, it perhaps represents an even more significant milestone for the cinema of our time. It is precisely this era that forms the subject of this new film, an era which, without resorting to dystopia or alternative history, is depicted as a reflection of that virtuality which, in the age of the internet and Virtual Reality, has now become an integral part of our actual reality. It is one of those films that seems to capture a specific moment in the world to convey its very essence, precisely because, despite the abundance of retro references, it explores a profoundly contemporary territory: digital cinema. This may well be the film that has gone furthest in exploring the supreme malleability of bodies and spaces afforded by the digital image, in the unfolding of a multifaceted material that presents itself to the eye even as it is already in the process of recomposing itself into something else, into another space that, from one second to the next, no longer obeys the same dimensions or the same laws of gravity, whose consistency rejects rigidness to embrace the full range of possibilities open to the imagination.""
