Vallo Toomla (1983) is a promising young talent in Estonian cinema. He has studied theology in Tartu University and film directing at the Baltic Film and Media School. Vallo has directed five short films and a puppet animated film. Pretenders is his debut feature film.

“In contemporary Western society we are living in a culture that has developed towards materialism not the human soul and spirituality. It is out of balance. This situation causes questions between social practice and individuation [...] I see around myself a lot of young adults grappling with the challenge of how to lead their lives so that they won't miss out on life, and at the same time, try to find out who they truly are. This is a situation where our main characters, Anna and Juhan, come from.
Pretenders is a story of the Y-Generation, young people born between 1980 and 2000, who value above all personal experience, development and self-expression – my generation.
