This film is Carax's first adaptation, inspired by Hermann Meville's Pierre: or the Ambiguities. This mysterious title of the film is in fact the acronym of the title of the novel in French. "Pierre is a wonderful novel of deceit... Deceit is when you don't know how to do anything, but nevertheless you try. It is when you pretend to be writing your life when in fact others are writing it for you" (L. Carax). In transposing Melville to modern France and with his transgressive cinema, Carax gives us "a crazy love story, a searing and overbearing vision of the social fracture, a parable on art and the statue of the artist" (S. Kaganski).
