"Pane e tulipani (Bread and Tulips) is a real escape attempt. Firstly Rosalba fleeing her peaceful family hell. But the story also flees social critique to move into a world of (not always pleasant) dreams, without cars, without mobile phones, almost without money" (Le Monde). Licia Maglietta plays a bored housewife who entrances Bruno Ganz. They make a touching couple around which the director and his scriptwriter assemble a cast of colourful, crazy and comic characters. "But the film always comes back to the central couple, the shy lassitude of Licia Maglietta, the silent despair of Bruno Ganz who transform each other as the sequences go by leading up to the final flight from the burdens of today" (Le Monde).
