Alex de la Iglésia
Julia Garcia, is an estate agent in Madrid and decides to occupy a flat while waiting for a buyer. Following an invasion of cockroaches, she accidently goes into the apartment of a dead neighbour where a large sum of money is hidden. She decides to leave with these winnings, but the community of neighbours is ready for anything to get the loot back...

The genesis of La Comunidad (Common Wealth) was a challenge Alex de la Iglesia threw down to his producer: writing a thriller in a single setting, a run-down building in Madrid. Each floor of the building seems to have a different genre in this comedy horror. It opens with a parody of a sitcom: "the film begins falsely. Because everything is a lie. What we wanted to show was the false idea of happiness in which we all live" (A. de la Iglesia). With the discovery of the neighbour's body and the loot, the plot turns towards suspense and horror mixed with satire, to finish with action scenes mirroring the Burtonesque world of Batman and Edward Scissorhands.
