This is Barbet Schroeder's fourth American film, and one in which he looks at the film noir genre, with this remake of Henry Hathaway's Kiss of death, made in 1947. For Barbet Schroeder, the challenge is not reproducing the atmosphere of the films noirs of the 1940, but rather making a modern, contemporary one" (Nicolas Saada). The very realistic action scenes follow in quick succession and the film was shot entirely in the Queens district of New York. "The direction always strives to do away with effects, framing, lights, to take the film to a sort of calm, of restrain, within which everything could explode" (Nicolas Saada).
