A man, aged seventeen or eighteen, is found haggard, motionless and filthy in the main square in Nuremberg on 26 May 1828. He can barely walk, only knows a handful of words, and has no idea who he is or where he is from. The intrigued inhabitants of Nuremberg eventually piece together his story: Kaspar Hauser (that is his name) had lived until then chained up in a windowless cellar...
