Using real images of the conflict, filmed in 1980 and not in 1976 as is the case in the novel, Volker Schlöndorff tries to show the continuing drama in the Lebanon; The reality of the film and the city at war is not fictional. "By day people go swimming, go to the market, buy vegetables and weapons; by night the wargame becomes fatal. I had the impression of being an extra. Where was my character, Laschen, a tabloid reporter who suddenly feels guilty about selling lies whereas his photographer is happy just to click away on his camera?" (Bruno Ganz).
