Not long after moving the US, Wim Wenders made a film half way between German auteur cinema and American action cinema with The American Friend. It was the first time that Wenders had worked with Bruno Ganz, who plays a peaceful German, Jonathan Zimmerman. From Patricia Highsmith's book Wenders kept the dubious relationship between Dennis Hopper and Bruno Ganz. "Suddenly ripped out of his old-fashioned shop in Hamburg, with death on his heels, haunted by the idea of the void, he finds himself propelled into concrete, glass, airports, luxury trains, savage customs" (Jacques Siclier). Plunged into a brutal world, Bruno Ganz's character acts like an automaton, wandering through the corridors of a hostile and impersonal underground.
