François Truffaut wanted to shoot a film noir around Fanny Ardant. "I revisited the theme of the marital thriller, where there are no gangsters and the police are just somewhere in the background, and where an inventive woman spins intrigue from beginning to end. (...) This film mixes two genres: the rainy night film genre with that crime novel atmosphere and American comedy; and I don't think we've seen a lot of that before." (F. Truffaut) "Shoot the Piano Player and Confidentially Yours, both shot at periods of time when the filmmaker was riding high and seemingly "untouchable", put everything back in the balance and reestablished the filmmaker's connection with his former work as a critic, reminding the viewer that right up to the end François Truffaut's only consideration was directing, that is where all that is noble about cinema is to be found and no where else. Truffaut's final lesson was to hold the banner of genre films high." (François Guérif)
