In Amen, Costa-Gavras shows the chaotic pathway of an SS officer who oversees, in extreme shock, the implementation of the final solution, and who decides to alert the religious authorities. Some have criticised Costa-Gavras for drawing a Manichaean and historically biased vision of a Vatican which was both complacent and deaf to the protests of Kurt Gernstein and his ally, the Jesuit Ricardo, criticisms to which Costa-Gavras replied that “it is the question of ethics which I'm interested in. A film is not a historical document. That is not its role. Amen's ambition is to raise moral questions. Particularly the question of indifference”.
