All the President's Men
All the President's Men
Alan J. Pakula
1976 - United States - 2h18
In 1972, five men were arrested for breaking into the Watergate building where the Democratic Party offices are located. While the case is presented as a simple news item, two Washington Post journalists, Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward, decide to pursue the investigation...
Just three years after the scandal that ultimately led to the resignation of Richard Nixon, All the President's Men is a project which was entirely initiated by Robert Redford. The actor-producer encouraged Bob Woodward to write the story from his perspective as a journalist by describing each step of their research. This idea gave birth to the founding film of a so-called "conspiracy" cinema of which Alan J. Pakula was one of the best representatives (including The Parallax View in 1974) and which examines here the state of a society where the end of anti-establishment ideals coincides with the widespread corruption of an all-powerful government. By force of their dogged tenacity, the two journalists gradually managed to unravel a sprawling puzzle and gave back to the press its counter-power strength.
