In the middle of the quiet, deserted countryside stretches an abandoned motorway as far as the eye can see, unused since it was built. At the edge of the tarmac, just a few metres from the safety barriers, stands an isolated house where a family lives. Work the motorway is about to start again and it has been announced that it will soon be open to traffic...
“Warning, UFO. This first feature-length film by a Swiss director noted for her short films and a TV drama, Des épaules solides (Broad Shoulders), turns a family chronicle into a fantastic fable. Home features a couple and their three children living peacefully on the edge of an abandoned motorway. When construction resumes and the first cars arrive, the family harmony breaks down. Engulfed by exhaust fumes and the roar of engines, the family suffocates. Especially the mother, played by Isabelle Huppert, who is as strong as she is fragile. Resplendent colours, frames within frames, the energy of the actors: everything works together to make this strange story a fascinating metaphor for our lifestyles and the illusion of being alone in the world. Intriguing without posing, clever without intellectualising, Home is a revelation”. (Isabelle Danel; Première)
