Mustang

Deniz Gamze Ergüven
2015 - Turkey / France / Germany / Qatar - 1h37

Screenings : monday 22 - 2:00 pm - Pathé - 1 - presented and followed by a debate with Abdoullah Ait Bella - sportif
In a remote Turkish, Lale and her four sisters are coming home from school, playing with some boys on the way, and triggering off a scandal with unforeseen consequences. The family home gradually becomes a prison, classes on keeping the house replace lessons at school and marriages are arranged. The five sisters, driven by the same desire for freedom, circumvent the limits imposed on them.
This first film by Deniz Gamze Ergüven, which is partially autobiographical, reconstructs an event from her youth, but with the characters rebelling. Crippled with shame, it took Ergüven years to find her outrage and look back on her youth in Ankara. “The unquestionable success of Mustang comes from the filming of the sisters, a superbly fluid and shimmering collective body, a bouquet of blossoming young girls as can be found from Proust to Coppola. But with Deniz Gamze Ergüven there is vitalism, a charged scenography which, at every instant, moves and catches the eye, hooking us. This is an aspect which puts the film on the side of “joyous feminism”, an expressed used by Agnès Varda to qualify the colour of her own films, and by capillarity Mustang, that the doyenne of filmmakers advertised on the Croisette (…).” (Emily Barnett; Les Inrocks)
