"A brilliant psychological thriller, Woman Unknown takes us to an era where everyone’s past can be held against them, a time when a form of purge is taking place, but where punishments are not meted out equally, depending on whether you are a man or a woman. Inevitably feminist, the film sends a chill down your spine with its clinical depiction of the fate that awaits Marie, brilliantly portrayed by Mathilde Arcel. Terrified at the thought of displeasing her ultra-strict future husband, and on edge whenever her past risks being exposed, she is the troubled heart of this merciless tale. The sets and costumes, like a photograph with a greyish tone, reflect the harshness of the era, when judgements were immediate and the possibility of incrimination just as swift. Even though its staging is traditional, it is undoubtedly a favourite for the upcoming Golden Lion." (Olivier Bachelard; abusdecine.com)
