"A school friend of Roman Polanski, for whom he supervised the writing of the screenplay for Knife in the Water, Jerzy Skolimowski was just 27 years old when he completed Walkover, a seminal work in the emergence of Eastern European cinema in the mid-1960s. This debut film, clearly influenced by the conventions of the French New Wave (breaks in tone, an abundance of continuity errors, handheld camerawork), above all allowed the young filmmaker to assert his unique personality by following the journey of a young ideologically adrift boxer, a role Jerzy Skolimowski himself lent his athletic physique and leading-man looks to."
