In Castillian volver means to return. After two very masculine films, Hable con ella (Talk to Her) and La mala educación (Bad Education), Pedro Almodóvar returns to his love for women. But above all he gives his interpretation of a return to life, to family solidarity shown through three generations of women, in this film where once again we see his obsessions and his visual style (fantasy, dreams, sensuality, saturated colours). "Volver has many many stories: murder, incest, adultery, mourning, haunting, ... Dark secrets which weave and unweave. Fates criss-crossing with great virtuosity. Old wives' tales and the truly down to earth. Pure melodrama. Everything goes very fast, driven forward by the energy and the power of Raimunda" (Emmanuel Burdeau).
