Of all the gondoliers in Venice Bepiis the one whose eye wanders the most. Every young woman he carries through the canals of the city gets a serenade, which drives his girlfriend Nina wild with jealousy. She gives him an ultimatum: if he wants to marry her he is only allowed to transport old tourists. When she sees him in the company of two young Americans, she takes the plunge and decides to marry Toni, who has been courting her for a long time. But Bepidoesn't want to let his fiancée get away from him that easily.

In this colourful amorous farce, Risi pays more attention to the gags than to the psychological aspects of the trio. The funniest aspect definitely resides in the metamorphosis of Alberto Sordi, renowned for his inimitable Roman accent, into a pure Venetian. Although this film does not have an important place in Risi's work, it is nevertheless one of his last films where cynicism has not yet invaded the overall tone. It is also an opportunity for Risi to make the most of the exceptional Venetian vista and make a film in natural settings highlighting an Italian region, which was fashionable at the time (Vacanze a Ischiain 1957, Raccontid'estatein 1958, Vacanze d'inverno in 1959 ...).
