"Una vita difficile (A Difficult Life)is a sort of assessment, a judgementagainst a sick society where Risi is the disillusioned critic using all the resources of satire. The Italy of the early 1960s the film describes holds within it the seeds of the errors of the future, generalised corruption, terrorism as the wrong response to an unjust society, the mafia at the heart of the State. With retrospect and the understanding of the current situation in Italy, the character ofCommendatoreBracci, a wheeler and dealer whose long arm stretches into all sorts of areas, takes on a particular air, a worrying anticipation of what was yet to come" (Jean A. Gili).
