Writer Philippe Grimbert said the interweaving of time made this novel almost impossible to adapt for the screen. However the vibrant echoes of the past and the present constantly resounding off each other are the strength of this film. Claude Miller slowly and sinuously reveals over three periods the meanders and dark torments of this family haunted by a heavy secret. The film doesn't just tell the story of "the" secret, but "one" secret among many, among all those that this period engendered. Interlocking secrets with insoluble revelations, making the past and pent up pain burst back up after so many years. Can you, and should you, say everything?
