The singularity of this film lies in the swing between laughter and anguish, cynicism and melancholy, that Risi is the master of, but above all the two faces characterising it. Risi was a psychiatrist by training, and in this film he explores the meanders of the human psyche through the metaphor of a journey through Italy, from Turin to Naples, through Genoa and Rome, each step being punctuated by the evolution of the character. Risi takes great pleasure in telling stories with significant human implications, but always rooted in the issues of his time, without forgetting the entertaining side. Best Actor Award in Cannes for Vittorio Gassman in 1975 for his character of Fausto.
