In 1978 commedia all'italiana was already clearly on the decline, and almost all the film production in the country followed the movement. It was in this sombre climate that Dino Risi made this film on age where his tiredness of making audiences laugh was transparent. Often compared to Fellini's Ginger e Fred or Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard, there is a clear tribute being paid here to a world of cinema which was disappearing, soon to be replaced by the more vulgar medium of television. In this bitter, lesser-known work in Risi's filmography, there is the superb Ornella Mutti, who first worked with Risi when the master's work was becoming more melancholic and nihilistic, after decades of comic supremacy. She plays the difficult role of youth, that he then found hard to portray positively.
