Préparez vos mouchoirs
Bertrand Blier

The film opens in a restaurant where a young couple is lunching together. The man is in despair as the woman he loves has stopped smiling. He suggests to the man at the next table that he will give her to him if he can take on the challenge. Alone and disconcerted he finally accepts the proposition. This is the beginning of a series of adventures punctuated by the variations of the love trio, swinging between hope and despair.

After the massive success of Les Valseuses (Going Places), Blier again worked with his favourite pair of actors Depardieu and Dewaere in what could be the sentimental flip side of the trio of petty crooks in Les Valseuses. As is often the case in Bertrand Blier's films, a woman's happiness is the focal point of men's concerns, the men here being helpless and impotent in the face of their loved-one's melancholy. Basking in the success of winning the Best Oscar for a Foreign Language Film, Préparez vos mouchoirs (Get Out Your Handkerchiefs) is one of Blier's most delicate films. "This touching story came to me as a necessity. I had to do it. My anger had calmed. I left my bazooka in the cupboard. It would only come out again with Tenue de soirée" (B. Blier).
