The genesis of the film comes from Blier wanting to shoot with Alain Delon. When Delon accepted everything went very quickly: the story was written immediately and the provided Delon with a role which was very different from his usual roles, earning him the César for Best Actor in 1985. Returning to the dreamlike tone of Buffet froid, Blier once again gives us an episodic script, forcing the audience to put any Cartesian logic to one side. The film is an explosion, "a cold and iconoclastic rage breaking the toy of the screenplay, fragmenting the story and leaving the imagination free to roam towards unexpected and terrifying shores" (Thierry Jousse).
