Whilst Jerzy Skolimowski is known for his penchant for internalised wanderings haunted by nothingness, rarely in his work has this theme found such powerful political and social resonance as in Moonlighting. In 1982, the struggle of a section of the Polish working class against the totalitarianism of the ‘People’s Republic’ inspired Skolimowski, who had by then emigrated to Britain, to create this relentless parable, which pitted ideologies against one another by transforming the value of labour into a monstrous entity before which men kneel, even if it means devouring one another. It must be said that the idea now towers just as high above partisan positions, whilst its current cinematic incarnation glows with a sooty radiance."" (Benoit Smith; criticat.com)
