Mathias Gokalp was born in 1973. Graduate of Paris III in French language and literature in 1995, Gokalp attended the INSAS in Brussels, this time graduating in 1999. As part of his studies, he directed Chroniques in 1991, L'or des blés in 1993, Macadam Cowboys in 1994, Salvatore Nicotra in 1998, and Rachid et Martha in 1999.
