After years away, spent getting up to all sorts of mischief, Viviane is back in Montherné, the small town in the Ardennes where her parents and her younger half-brother, Marc, live. For Les Amoureux (Lovers), on the other hand, I worked in total confidence with the cast, particularly Nathalie Richard and Pascal Cervo. The film arose from the fact that Nathalie and I wanted to work together again after Interdit d’amour, the TV film I had directed in the meantime. The producers didn’t agree; they imagined the character of Viviane to be more attractive, but I was absolutely set on her. I’ll remember for the rest of my life the first scene I shot with her for Interdit d’amour: I told myself that, with an actress like her, I couldn’t go wrong. And the positive reception the TV film received gave me the confidence to embark on a personal project. I was no longer alone, which is essential after a setback.""
