For his 3rd feature Laurent Cantet explores the question of the secret taking inspiration from an actual event which took place in 1993: the Romand Affair. "Lying corresponds to a logic of murder and suicide. The tension is unbearable at the end of the film when he returns home. The tragedy lies in the character's self-abnegation, which is almost a suicide. He gives in to the authority as a father and the dream of freedom comes up against the real love he has for his family. In his quest for freedom, solitude is too painful, he therefore accepts to return to a normal situation but without happiness" Laurent Cantet.
