In this comedy of manners, the plot around the grandmother soon becomes secondary giving way to the sketches of the other characters (particularly the loyal servant and her secret fiancé), each following efficiently on from the other. Although the film relies a great deal on the performance of Tina Pica, a Neapolitan actress Risi was very fond of (Pane, amore, e ... (Bread, Love and...), Il signo de Venus (The Sign of Venus)), as a tyrannical, manipulative and matriarchal grandmother, he nevertheless avoids a certain polemic against the rites of an old-fashioned mentality, which he developed here without any heaviness. This film is also an important ethnographic document since it explores the ruralness of the landscapes of this province of Naples, and is an accurate representation of Mediterranean culture at the time.
