Maria Schrader’s film rests on a finely honed acting duo. Dan Stevens crafts his movements with millimetre precision, in a subtle choreography. Maren Eggert, for her part, remains on her guard, torn between restraint and explosion, between passivity and rejection of this situation. At this stage in the plot, the film veers into surrealism, venturing to the frontier between human and machine. Can Alma be moved by Tom’s love? She is not fooled; he would put just as much effort into seducing another woman if he were ‘reset’ for a new encounter. But do humans not also spend their time ‘resetting’ themselves? Is Tom really all that different from Alma? Created by men and women, robots remind us of our own condition as beings who are socially and culturally ‘constructed’. And the robot’s melancholy is very real."" (Clarisse Fabre; lemonde.fr)
