Alberto Nardi is a megolomaniac and penniless businessman from Rome. He is married to Elvira, a rich, socialite businesswoman from Milan, who despises him and calls him a "cretin" in public. Unperturbed by her condescension he constantly keeps trying to squeeze money out of her to bankroll his fragile projects, but in vain. He realises how much easier it would be if he was a widow and could benefit from his inheritance.

Franca Valeri, an actress who is unfortunately not well enough known outside Italy, has here a hilarious character role, exploiting her broad range of comic talents through this unpleasant but wealthy wife. Alberto Sordi is also perfect as the sleazy and profiteering Italian, feigning sadness at the premature death of his wife in this grotesque, but intelligent, dark comedy, which jumps effortlessly from situation comedy to macabre humour. An unusual film for the Italian cinema of the time, it is cynical and merciless, echoing thrillers, but above all Risi gives us a critique of the Italian society of the economic boom and the values of the business world.
