Dino Risi
Dino is unemployed and has been separated from his wife for a number of years. He no longer sees his son, who lives with his mother who favours a strict Germanic education. This particular Thursday, though, he has an opportunity to spend a whole day with him after years of absence. He grasps this moment as an occasion to amaze him by pretending to be what he is not: a rich and important businessman, a lover of big cars and respectful of the fairer sex. But the boy soon sees behind the mask.

The typical antihero of the commedie all'Italiana, Dino represents a loser, incapable of managing his professional situation and counting financially on the woman he shares his life with. Everything is in place for a biting social satire. But as usual, Dino Risi avoids falling into the trap of sentimentalism thanks to the subtlety of the gags and the dialogues. He draws an affectionate portrait of this man full of good intentions towards his son who is moved by the clumsiness of his hopeless father.
