The unassailable chef d'oeuvre of commedie all'Italiana, this cynical and ironic mosaic of Italy following the economic miracle is without doubt one of the most representative films of Dino Risi's cinematographic style. He portrays hypocritical middle-class Italians, and has no compunction in attacking institutions either. Risi, who does not take a specifically moralising standpoint, stated that for him "comedy is cruel. It must mock other people's idiocy and their stupidity. But other people are each and every one of us; comics must not point out one individual while protecting another. Comics feed off human failings, stupidity and poverty".
