In a small town in Poland, Léon Okrasa works in a hospital. He once witnessed a brutal rape. The victim, Anna, is a young nurse who works at the same hospital. Léon spends his time spying on Anna, watching her day and night. It becomes a genuine obsession… One evening, he finally breaks into Anna’s flat through the window she has left ajar. Léon then settles down on her bed, watches her as she sleeps, and immerses himself in her world. Just how far will he go?

In Deep End (filmed in London in 1970), Skolimowski depicted the shyness and frustration of teenage love whilst playing on the pop appeal of the late 1960s (Swinging London, music by Can, young and beautiful bodies). Cztery noce z Anna (Four Nights with Anna) tells much the same story of a ‘perverse Romeo’ (the expression is borrowed from the film), but set in a rural context, where people are jaded and weary, and at a time when cinema has changed (the excitement of New Cinema in the wake of the French New Wave is no longer there). Yes, the 2008 setting forms an unattractive veneer, but doesn’t Skolimowski, time and again, immerse himself in the era he is filming to corrode that veneer from within? Four Nights with Anna therefore appears more beautiful than Deep End, precisely because the contemporary veneer lacks any immediate allure."" (Pascale Bodet; chronicart.com)
