By chance Nino sees a woman on a bus with a familiar but scarred face. He is disturbed by this when he realises that it is Anna, the woman he was madly in love with when he was young, but who died from a tumour three years earlier. She continues to appear in the man's everyday life, reviving his old passions.

For his 40th film, Risi tells us a story on the verge of the supernatural. In the thick fog of the streets of Pavia, he films a mysterious, melancholic couple rediscovering their never-forgotten love. Their story, hanging between the past and the present, metaphysical horror and ghosts, follows the hallucinations of a sad man with a dull life, seen from the inside. The screenplay very cleverly blends the love story with a police investigation, keeping the viewer on the edge of their seat, rather like Anima persa (The Forbidden Room) made six years earlier. The wonderful Romy Schneider is very moving as a tortured woman in one of her last roles opposite a delicate and touching Marcello Mastroianni as a man wounded by an existence unconsciously lived in waiting.
