Eva is, first and foremost, a film that immerses the viewer in a world, in an atmosphere. It begins with a dazzling opening sequence: golden-brown droplets, occasionally revealing a colourful image, come together to form a complex structure. Then the film proper begins… Winter landscapes, dark forests, white expanses where men move about looking as if they’ve stepped straight out of the 1970s: chunky glasses, thick beards, tailored cold-coloured suits (brown, grey, blue). But surprisingly, they speak Spanish and are accompanied by robots… Here, there are no industrialised sets devoid of nature, no high-tech interiors in monotonous stainless steel, no geometric outfits made from outlandish fabrics. Kike Maíllo, in his debut feature film, has set out to create a world that is both distant and familiar, and this retro-futuristic world succeeds perfectly in making the viewer have a feeling of both strangeness and familiarity.""
