Avril, a lawyer who specialises in lost causes, has made a promise to herself: she will win her next case! But when Dariuch, a client as desperate as his cause, asks her to defend his faithful companion Cosmos, Avril’s convictions take over. Thus begins a trial as unexpected as it is turbulent: the trial of the dog.

Inspired by a true Swiss story, Laetitia Dosch’s directing debut (in which she also stars) is reminiscent of Justine Triet’s early work, when the actress was her muse. Dosch’s strong personality inevitably shines through on screen. Spectacle justice, speciesism, two-track feminism, the cynicism of some, the naivety of others and the loss of common sense: Dosch pokes fun at the madness of our times in a comedy which is zany and formally chaotic, full of lovable lunatics (Zadi as a sensitive dog handler, François Damiens with Philippe Garrel’s hair). ‘Are we animals like any other?’ she wonders with blunt humour and a beautiful spirit. Her fantasy is humanism. (Nicolas Schaller; nouvelobs.com)
