Through the portrait of a father and a son in crisis, Dino Risi gives us an analysis of a conflict between generations and the malaise of young people during the "years of lead": "Risi shows the causes of the death of feelings and a general indifference with the desperate dark humour of an orchestral conductor" (Michel Grodent). Acclaimed at its presentation in Cannes, but given the cold shoulder in Italy, the film gives a pessimistic vision of the country by attacking a burning subject of the time. This film was the 15th collaboration between Risi and Vittorio Gassman who puts all his talent into a vile and odious character.
