After a foray into the absurd and the surrealist (Buffet froid), Bertrand Blier returned with new variations on love. He said that he had only filmed "cretins and cowards", and this time created the flip side of Préparez vos mouchoirs (Get Out Your Handkerchiefs) in what could be seen as a diptych: a story of physical love consummated between a disenchanted minor and her step father, "a feckless loser" (B. Blier). This subversively-themed melodrama is actually treated with a great deal of simplicity and care, while avoiding all the pitfalls of voyeurism. A new direction in Blier's career.
