Dino Risi
Tino goes to live temporarily with his aunt and uncle in Venice with the idea of studying at art school. He soon notices that his aunt is behaving somewhat strangely. But he becomes particularly concerned when he starts hearing noises for the attic during the night when everyone is asleep.

For the first time in his career Risi adventures into the psychological thriller. In a deserted Venice he creates a heavy and disturbing atmosphere in which the audience will slowly discover the mysteries of the Gassman/Deneuve couple through the eyes of a young man. After allowing doubts to hover concerning a supernatural source for the strange phenomena in the house, he makes the couple falter and then crumble before our eyes. The discrete and gentle Elise seems literally to evaporate as the story develops (Catherine Deneuve's pale skin becomes almost translucid), as if eaten away by the brutality of her husband, but above all by a heavy and unbearable secret.
