Since Brothers (Susanne Bier, 2004) and Armadillo (Janus Metz, 2010), we have known that the Danish military presence in Afghanistan has had a profound impact on the national psyche and stimulated the imagination of the best local filmmakers. The director of the powerful R and Hijacking, with his trademark naturalism and sense of immersion, has created a humanistic war film, clearly divided into two parts: in the first, we are taken along with a contingent on an impossible pacification mission that sets our nerves on edge; in the second, we witness the military and moral trial of a man indirectly responsible for the deaths of Afghan civilians (he followed orders for the wrong reason and broke them for the right reason) and indebted to his family, who have always supported him. A War is not a film about goodies and baddies (it may give that impression), but a keen observation of the dysfunction of an institution and, by extension, of a cause and adherence to that cause, on an individual level. The conclusion is as terrible as the final shot, which suggests impossible redemption. (Christophe Narbonne; Première)
