Located 200 km from Sicily, the island of Lampedusa is the gateway for hundreds of migrants hoping to settle in Europe and find a better life there. Samuele is 12 years old and lives on this island.
“The border has (...) moved from the shores of Lampedusa to the open sea, with military vessels stopping ships carrying migrants, and taking them directly to the port, from where they are taken by bus to a centre (...). There is therefore no interaction between the migrants and the inhabitants, except for the doctor who examines them and is one of the central characters in my film. The mystery remains on the sea which can bring corpses into the islanders' lives, but which is not necessarily reflected in their daily lives. It is a miniature of what is happening throughout Europe, where fears and negative feelings are expressed towards migrants who are perceived, above all, as shadows with whom we do not communicate” (Gianfranco Rosi). The film won the Golden Bear at the 2016 Berlinale.
