"At the beginning, the screenplay of The Way told the story of eleven prisoners on furlough and through their stories painted a large panorama of Turkey. Then they became five. The anecdotes are those my prison buddies told me, sometimes sketched in a few words, sometimes quite detailed. (...) I tried to be as objective as possible with my characters, but I myself at one time or another in my life have known each of their pains, their joys, their feelings. (...) I relied on my former assistant Serif Gören with whom I have a great connection. We corresponded by letter everyday during the filming. (...) In The Way, I wanted to show how Turkey had become an enormous low-security prison with all the citizens its prisoners." (Yilmaz Güney) The Word was co-winner with Missing by Costa Gavras of the Palme d'Or, Cannes 1982.
