Between the town and the country, Almodóvar weaves a tale on the verge of fantasy. The film opens with the wind, a wind which turns heads to the extent that strange stories and ghosts re-emerge. Except that in La Mancha, wind turbines have taken the place of windmills. Almodóvar once again finds the chorus of his best female works, and, despite deep-buried dramas, the film burns with a beautiful feminine optimism. Volver gave Penelope Cruz her first lead role for Almodóvar and also marks the return of Carmen Maura 18 years and 8 films after their last work together, and the female cast won best actress award in Cannes in 2006.
