Agnès Varda and JR go of on the roads of France, far from the city, travelling with JR's (magic) photographic van. Random encounters or prepared projects, they went out to others, listened to them, photographed them and sometimes displayed them. The film also tells the story of their friendship which grew over the period of the shoot, between surprises and teasing, laughing at differences.

It was Agnès Varda's daughter Rosalie who had the idea of a meeting between his mother and photographer JR. The natural understanding between them and the curiosity they had for their respective work led them to improvise a film as the encounters went by. Le Monde said that “Visages, Villages (Faces, Places) reminds us that a film is not necessarily born of a script, or even a pre-established subject, but can come out of nowhere, a gesture, an idea, a Sunday walk – the giant collages have the particular purpose being a transitory medium to collect passing portraits, fleeting encounters”. In Cannes, the film won the Œil d'or for Best Documentary.
